WebXam Animal and Plant Practice Test

The example of a primary consumer in a terrestrial environment is a rabbit. Primary consumers are organisms that eat producers, which are typically plants or plant-based materials. In this context, rabbits consume grasses and other plant matter, placing them at the second trophic level in a food chain. As herbivores, they are crucial for transferring energy from the producers to the higher trophic levels, such as carnivores and omnivores.

In contrast, hawks are predators that would be classified as tertiary consumers, feeding on primary and secondary consumers. Wolves, similar to hawks, are also higher-level consumers that primarily hunt and consume herbivores and sometimes other predators. Grass plants represent producers rather than consumers, as they use photosynthesis to convert sunlight into energy, forming the base of the food chain.
