What is the function of meristematic tissue?

Meristematic tissue plays a crucial role in plant growth as it is responsible for producing new cells. This tissue is found in specific regions of the plant, such as the tips of roots and shoots, where growth occurs. The cells in meristematic tissue are undifferentiated, meaning they have the potential to divide and differentiate into various types of specialized cells as the plant develops.

This ongoing cell division is essential for longitudinal growth (elongation) and lateral growth (thickening) of the plant, allowing it to increase in height and width as well as regenerate parts of itself when necessary. Without meristematic tissue, plants would not be able to grow or adapt to their environment effectively.

In contrast, producing fruit and seeds, transporting water and nutrients, and providing structural support are functions associated with other types of plant tissues. These other functions highlight the diverse roles that various tissues play in the overall physiology of plants, but they do not encompass the unique and essential role of meristematic tissue in facilitating growth.
